Nisei values are shaping leadership
Gov. David Ige is interviewed by Kathy Collins during Saturday’s Nisei Veterans Memorial Center Leadership Series presentation at the Kahili Golf Course’s Nahele Ballroom in Waikapu. He’s the third Hawaii governor to speak in the series scheduled to continue through the year. The first two speakers were former Govs. George Ariyoshi and John Waihee. Ige and his wife, Dawn Amano-Ige, both have fathers — Tokio Ige and Sakuji Amano –who served in the 100th Infantry Battalion and 442nd Regimental Combat Team during World War II. Ige said the values lived every day by his parents helped shape his vision of leadership. “I don’t believe in creating drama for drama’s sake,” he said. “I also don’t believe in bullying people.” He said he has tried to live and lead in a way that would make his parents proud and to not do things that would embarrass them.
