Pukalani resident Marie DeJournette will host a fundraiser for breast cancer research at Flatbread Co. in Paia on July 10, according to an announcement from DeJournette.
The fundraiser will take place from 5 to 9 p.m. Flatbread will donate 15 percent of its food sales to Breast Cancer Prevention Partners, formerly the Breast Cancer Fund. A silent auction will also feature gift baskets of natural products from several businesses including Mana Foods, Mahina, Northshore Chiropractic, Maui Reiki Healing and Deep2Peak.
Breast Cancer Prevention Partners is a science-based advocacy organization that works to prevent breast cancer by eliminating exposure to toxic chemicals and radiation. Founded in 1992, the organization works from the knowledge that breast cancer is not simply a personal tragedy, but a public health priority. This year, more than 1 million women worldwide will be diagnosed with breast cancer.
DeJournette got involved in 2007, participating in the organization’s annual Climb Against the Odds event on Mount Shasta in California in honor of her friends who had survived the disease. She continued raising funds through high-altitude treks and climbs around the world and has raised more than $93,000 for the organization since 2007.
DeJournette also worked as the outdoor events manager for Breast Cancer Prevention Partners from 2015 to 2017, but said all of her fundraising climbs have been independent. Since she pays all her own expenses, 100 percent of all donations go directly to the organization. DeJournette plans to participate in the Baker Lake 50K trail race in Washington state on Oct. 6 and has committed to raising $3,000 before Oct. 1.
