Police seek assault suspect
A man who allegedly assaulted a female hiker Sunday in Haleakala Crater is being sought by police, state Department of Land and Natural Resource officials and Haleakala National Park Service rangers, park officials said Monday.
The man was described as 5 feet, 9 inches tall, wearing black pants, a black shirt and in his mid-to-late 30s.
Visitor access to the crater from the Summit and Kipahulu Districts is closed through Wednesday afternoon, park officials said. No cabin or backcountry camping permits will be issued until further notice.
Visitors are welcome in all front-country areas of the Summit and Kipahulu districts, which are accessible by road, including the Pipiwai Trail. Sunrise visitation at the summit today and Wednesday mornings is open to reservation holders and tours.
Anyone with information on the incident should call National Park Service Dispatch at 985-6179 or Maui Police Department at 244-6400.
