Stocking up for Project Backpack
T. Lay (from right) of Kula stops by Queen Ka’ahumanu Center on Saturday to drop off some school supplies to the Kiwanis of the Valley Isle’s Project Backpack table as Trevor Tanaka and Shari Yamamoto look on. Lay says she donates because “I grew up poor and know how important this is.” The club’s annual community service project — dubbed “Equipped to Learn” — provides new backpacks chock-full of school supplies to Maui Economic Opportunity for keiki entering kindergarten in the fall. The Project Backpack volunteers will return to their table in QKC’s Kokua Korner today to accept cash and school supply donations as well as on Friday, Saturday and July 29.
