Flags at half-staff for fallen firefighter

American and Hawaii flags will fly at half-staff today and Sunday in honor of firefighter Brian Hughes of Hilo, who died while battling the Ferguson fire near Yosemite National Park in California on Sunday.

Hughes, 33, was captain of an elite firefighting team called the Arrowhead Hotshots. He was one of thousands of firefighters battling deadly blazes across California.

He was killed by a falling tree.

Hughes is originally from Hilo, where he attended Hilo Union, Hilo Intermediate and Hilo High schools. He is survived by his parents, sister and fiancee.

Memorial services for Hughes in Hilo are set for today and Sunday.
