Haleakala ride to benefit Imua

Mark Pelzner

Mark Pelzner, a visitor from Alameda, Calif., will be taking on the Cycle to the Sun course up Haleakala today while raising funds for Imua Family Services.

He is on vacation with his family, and he and friend Dave Fong decided to use the 36-mile trek up the 10,023-foot mountain to raise funds for a local charity. That charity is Imua Family Services.

The nonprofit organization that supports children and families with disabilities was selected in part because of Pelz-ner’s cousin Jack, who had brain cancer as a child and has special needs due to treatments to combat the disease. He is cancer-free today and recently graduated from high school and will be attending a local junior college, a news release from Imua said.

Donations will be matched by the nonprofit The Hate Project, which supports education and services for children, veterans and local communities through the crowd-sourced funding of goods, Imua said.

A Facebook post recently indicated that Pelzner has raised nearly $2,000 from family, friends and business partners.

His trek begins in Paia, travels through Makawao, then up to Kula and finally onto Crater Road to the summit.
