Junk car disposal program to return

The county program that allows residents to dispose of one vehicle per year for free will be reinstated Sept. 4, the county Department of Environmental Management said Thursday.

The program had been suspended in January due to lack of funds.

Owners will be required to register their vehicles as “permanently junked” with the Department of Motor Vehicles and Licensing and deliver their vehicles to Hammerhead Metals Recycling in the Central Maui Baseyard.

The goal of the program is to reduce the junking of vehicles along roadsides and in open fields.

To participate in the program, download FAQs, eligibility criteria and instructions, as well as the “Intake Form,” at www.mauicounty.gov/avm on or after Sept. 1.
