Woman arrested for stealing wallet
A woman was arrested Monday after she was found with a wallet that had been stolen from a shopping cart at a Wailuku store, police said.
Karen Brown Young, 52, who gave no local address, was charged with credit card theft, unauthorized possession of confidential personal information, fraudulent use of a credit card, attempted fourth-degree theft and fourth-degree theft.
According to police, a woman reported her wallet was stolen from her shopping cart near the entrance of Safeway Maui Lani at 4:22 p.m. Monday.
After the store manager reviewed the store’s closed-circuit television, a woman later identified as Brown Young was seen taking the wallet from the shopping cart, going into the store and trying to use the victim’s debit card to buy a gift card, according to a declaration filed in court to support the charges.
Brown Young was sitting on a bench outside the store when police arrived. Police said she agreed to let police search her purse, which contained the victim’s stolen wallet and identification and debit cards.
Brown Young was released on supervision when she appeared in Wailuku District Court on Tuesday afternoon. She was ordered to stay away from the victim, the Safeway store and the store manager.
