Kahului house fire displaces 17 people
Seventeen residents were displaced by a fire early Friday at a residence on Pohai Street in Kahului, police said.
Wailuku patrol officers and a Kahului engine company responded to the fire reported at 1:18 a.m. Officers reported no flames but heavy smoke coming from the main residence on the property.
Police officers evacuated residents from the main residence and multiple dwellings on the property. Firefighters located and extinguished the fire in the southwest bedroom of the main residence.
Damage was estimated at $21,000 to the bedroom and its contents.
An investigation determined the cause of the fire was accidental and no foul play is suspected, police said. No injuries were reported.
American Red Cross volunteers also responded to the scene to assist residents.
