Man tries to flee in taxi

Bail was set at $16,500 for a man who tried to leave in a taxi after crashing a stolen rental car Monday morning in Kahului, police said.

Robert Akuna, 25, of Kahului was charged with unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, first-degree theft, leaving the scene of an accident involving injury and inattention to driving.

Akuna was identified as the driver of a 2018 GMC Terrain that was stolen at 9:06 a.m. Monday when it sped out of the Avis Rent A Car lot at 884 W. Mokuea Place in Kahului, according to a declaration filed in court to support the charges.

From the car rental lot, the stolen vehicle went north toward Amala Place and was involved in a collision at Koeheke Street and Palapala Drive in Kahului, police said. Witnesses said Akuna got out of the vehicle and got into a taxi while trying to flee, but bystanders kept him at the scene.
