Lean Jeffrey Gumboc received the Outstanding Recruit Award at a graduation ceremony Sept. 28 for five members of the Maui Police Department’s 87th Recruit Class.

Gumboc also received the Neil T. Endo Fireams Award and Scholastic Achievement Award.

Other awards went to Randen Abafo, who received the Sensei Shinichi Suzuki Arrest Defense Tactics Award; and Mitchell Navarro, who received the M. Cecil “Rusty” Dickson Physical Fitness Award and Best Notebook Award.

The other graduates were Iokepa Albino-Shamblin and Codie Chong.

The ceremony was held at the Maui Beach Hotel’s Elleair Ballroom in Kahului.

The recruits successfully completed eight months of intense classroom and functional skills training in areas including criminal law, report writing, firearms training, physical training and emergency vehicle operations.

The graduates will be paired with field training officers for four months before moving on to work on their own.
