Intricate stitch work

St. Anthony Church Hui Na Lima Kokua member Valerie Standing (first photo) waits for someone to make a bid on a large, intricately sewn traditional Hawaiian quilt during Saturday’s Christmas Fair. She said it took Hui Na Lima Kokua members four years to complete the quilt, which she estimated to be around 10-by-8 feet. The club was hoping to get a bid of at least $5,000 for the quilt as part of the annual fundraiser for St. Anthony Church. “In a way, I hate to see it go,” Standing said, noting the many hundreds of hours of friendly cooperation and companionship it took club members to make it.

Catherine Giamenelli of Wailuku (second photo) folds a quilt made by her sister, Lena Wachniki, Saturday morning during the annual St. Anthony Church Christmas Fair. Giamenelli said her sister stitched the quilt to donate to the event before she died in March.
