Pools of Oheo in Kipahulu reopen
The Pools of Oheo in the Kipahulu District of Haleakala National Park will reopen Thursday after being closed for almost two years, the park announced Tuesday.
The pools closed Jan. 3, 2017, when a rock slide resulted in a minor injury to a park visitor, the park said.
Earlier this year, the park hired a contractor to remove vegetation, loose debris and rocks likely to fall from the cliff face of Oheo Gulch. The aim of the project was to significantly reduce the potential for rockfall hazards or falling debris.
The park noted that violent flash floods or rockfalls can occur in the stream at any time. Injuries and deaths have occurred.
The Pools of Oheo are regarded by the Native Hawaiian people as sacred for ceremonial use, the park said. Visitors are asked to be be respectful while visiting the pools.
