Under a Maui Blood Moon

First photo: A partially eclipsed moon (far left) rises above the twinkling lights of Upcountry Maui, as seen from Maui Veterans Highway.

Second photo: The moon takes on a blood-red hue over Maui during the lunar eclipse at around 7 p.m. Sunday. Visible from North and South America and parts of Europe, the “wolf moon” phenomenon occurred as the moon passed through Earth’s shadow, and sunlight scattering off the Earth’s atmosphere turned the moon a blood red. The entire eclipse took more than three hours with the moon completely bathed in Earth’s shadow for about an hour.
