Central Pacific provides $50,000 to MYFS facility

Maui Youth & Family Services has received a $50,000 grant from the Central Pacific Bank Foundation to support the construction of a new coordinated programs facility in Makawao, the bank announced last week.

MYFS’ mission is to empower youth and families challenged with behavioral health issues to become responsible and contributing members of the community.

“We support this project because we see the positive difference that MYFS makes,” said Kelli Myers, Central Pacific Bank senior business banking officer and MYFS board member. “Without this organization, many young people and families who are struggling would not have opportunities to succeed within a safe and supportive environment.”

MYFS programs include adolescent outpatient and school-based substance abuse treatment, emergency shelter, therapeutic foster care, outreach and advocacy, support for homeless and former foster youth, prevention services and one-on-one mentoring.

“Our existing building is almost 80 years old, so a new facility will eliminate immediate extensive repair expenses, reduce long-term maintenance costs and most importantly, enable us to continue providing vital substance abuse and behavioral health services to our community,” said Jud Cunningham, MYFS chief executive officer.

The facility will serve as a central hub for training, meetings, supply distribution and management of programs run by MYFS and its nonprofit partner agencies Aloha House and Malama Family Recovery Center.

The total cost of the new facility will be about $2.7 million with construction scheduled to start in the spring, MYFS said. Work is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
