Junior lifeguard period to apply opens Feb. 15
The Maui News
The Maui Fire Department’s Ocean Safety Bureau will start accepting applications for its summer junior lifeguard program starting Feb. 15.
The program is open to ages 12-17 and will take place in the north, south and west districts. There will be five, one-week sessions: June 10-14, June 17-21, June 24-28, July 1-5 and July 8-12. Each day will run from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Registration is open from Feb. 15 to April 26, and spots will be given on a first-come, first-served basis. Each session is open to 15 participants. Only one session is allowed per participant, and no switching is allowed after signing up. However, participants can sign up for multiple sessions during a special registration window from April 29 to May 24 to fill all open spots.
New participants need a copy of their birth certificates (the age requirement must be met by June) and must also pass a swim assessment, unless they are part of a swim club or school team. The assessment will take place on May 4 and 11 (participants only need to attend one) and will require a 300-yard, nonstop swim within 11 minutes.
The tests will take place at 9 a.m. in the participant’s district — Baldwin Beach Park in the north district, Kamaole I Beach Park in the south district and Hanakaoo Beach Park in the west district. A parent or legal guardian must be present, and a contact phone number and email address are required.
Tony Colletta will be the instructor for the north district, while Kaipo Chong will instruct the south district and Ryan Cabrera will instruct the west district.
