Two pedestrians struck and killed in separate incidents on Saturday

A 22-year-old man has died after being struck by a car early Saturday morning in Kihei.

Police identified the man as Brandon M. Wilson of Pukalani.

The collision occurred at about 1:19 a.m. Saturday on Maui Veteran’s Highway, south of mile marker 6 in Kihei. Wilson was walking in the outermost northbound lane of the roadway when he was struck by a red 1996 Jeep Cherokee traveling north in the same lane.

Wilson was taken to the hospital in critical condition with life-threatening injuries. Police said Sunday that Wilson had succumbed to his injuries.

The driver of the vehicle, a 33-year-old woman, was not injured. The initial investigation revealed that she was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the collision.

The northbound lane of the highway was closed for about two and a half hours while police investigated. The involvement of speed, drugs and alcohol are still pending as the investigation continues.

Wilson is Maui County’s fourth traffic fatality of the year.

Another pedestrian was also struck and killed at about 7 p.m. Saturday on Makani Road, east of Mokuahi Street in Makawao.

The pedestrian, a 71-year-old male, was walking on the makai shoulder of the roadway when he was struck by a vehicle traveling westbound. The vehicle failed to stop and fled the scene before police arrived.

The pedestrian was taken to the hospital in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead. His name is being withheld while police notify next of kin.

The roadway was closed for about three hours as police conducted an investigation. The involvement of speed, drugs and alcohol are still pending.

Police later found the vehicle parked in front of a Pukalani residence. The driver, a 66-year-old Pukalani man, was placed under arrest and later released pending investigation.

The unidentified 71-year-old pedestrian is Maui County’s fifth traffic fatality of the year, as compared to one fatality at the same time last year.
