Fair housing laws topic of gathering
The county Department of Housing and Human Concerns will host a free training session on fair housing laws and procedures from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. April 12 at the University of Hawaii Maui College.
The public is invited to the free training, which will be held in the Ike Lea Building, Room 144 on campus. The session will summarize federal and state fair housing laws, fair housing complaints, investigation procedures and specific topics, such as discrimination against protected classes.
Federal protected classes include race, color, national origin, religion, sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, familial status and disability. State laws also protect marital status, ancestry, age or HIV infection, which will be explained further in the review session.
The county is hosting this event in partnership with the Hawaii Civil Rights Commission, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and Legal Aid Society of Hawaii.
The registration form can be found on the Maui county website at www.mauicounty.gov/DocumentCenter/View/115809 /2019-April-Fair-Housing-Flyer-and-Registration.
