High surf up again

The National Weather Service has issued another high-surf advisory for north- and west-facing shores of Molokai and north-facing shores of Maui, until 6 p.m. today.

Surf is expected to reach 12 to 16 feet along north-facing shores of Maui and Molokai and 8 to 12 feet along west-facing shores of Molokai, the weather service said.

Strong breaking waves and shore break and longshore and rip currents are expected.

At about 10:30 a.m. Friday, the weather service reported waves of 10 to 12 feet in the outer shore break at Baldwin Beach Park and 6-to-12-feet-plus at Hookipa Beach Park on the north shore.

In other weather news, a brown-water advisory was posted for Honolua Bay on the west side by the state Department of Health on Friday.

Heavy rain has resulted in stormwater runoff entering into coastal waters. Kahakuloa reported a quarter inch of rain for the 24-hour period ending at 4:45 p.m. Friday.

The public is advised to stay out of floodwaters and stormwater runoff due to contamination from overflowing cesspools and sewers. The water may contain pesticides, animal fecal matter and carcasses, pathogens, chemicals and flood debris, the Health Department said.

Not all coastal areas may be impacted by runoff, but if the water is brown stay out, the Health Department advised.

The weather forecast for today on Maui is partly sunny in the morning becoming fully sunny later in the day. Breezy conditions with easterly winds of 15 to 20 mph and scattered showers with a 40 percent chance of rain are forecast. High temperatures could reach 82 degrees with overnight lows of 61 degrees.
