Hikers spend night in forest

Three hikers spent the night in the mountains above Keanae on Monday after being unable to make it back to the trailhead by nightfall, Maui fire officials said.

A father and daughter and another man set out at about 12:30 p.m. Monday for a hike and sightseeing, according to Assistant Chief Val Martin. Their intended loop hike was blocked by a landslide, forcing them to backtrack.

But the hike back was too long and could not be completed before dark, Martin said. They hunkered down and spent the night in the forest until daylight, when they hiked out.

Family members contacted authorities when the trio did not return as scheduled and a search for them was conducted Tuesday morning.

Shortly after firefighters and Maui police started the search, the party was found, walking out on their own, Martin said. They did not require assistance or medical attention.

“They did the right thing by staying put in the darkness and letting others know where they were going to be,” said Martin.
