Maui County Council Member Riki Hokama, chairman of the Budget and Finance Committee, will seek re-election to the council’s Lanai residency seat for a fifth consecutive term, according to an announcement.
Hokama served on the council from 1999 to 2009, sat out for a term because of term limits, and returned to the panel in 2011.
He was first elected to public office in 1978 as a delegate to the Hawaii State Constitutional Convention. Hokama has been council chairman and chairman of the council’s Policy and Economic Development committees.
Hokama has been an advocate for fiscally responsible government, job creation and services for young and elderly residents, his announcement said.
He also has been active with the National Association of Counties since 2001, serving as its president from 2014 to 2015. He has served on numerous local committees and groups.
Raised on Lanai, he’s a graduate of Lanai High and Elementary School and the University of Hawaii, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology. He worked for Castle & Cooke Co. (Dole Pineapple Co.), other private businesses and the state Legislature.
