Lahaina resident announces Green Party candidacy for W. Maui House seat

Jen Mather, a youth advocate and Waiola Church office administrator, is running as a Green Party candidate for the 10th District House seat held by West Maui Rep. Angus McKelvey.

The district includes Maalaea and north Kihei.

“The political arena has been overwhelmed by special, outside interests that work to silence the people of this aina,” she said in an announcement. “It is time for new voices to represent this community that continually sacrifices to make ends meet and protect what they love.”

Mather is the president and co-founder of the parent teacher organization of King Kamehameha III Elementary School in Lahaina, and she’s a Girl Scout troop leader. Being a mother has influenced her core values, she said.

“Voters are smarter than ever, and they’ll begin investigating candidates’ foundational values to see how they think, how they’ll interpret what’s being said to them, and most importantly, how they’ll vote on the floor of the House,” she said.
