Purim to be celebrated in Kihei

The Jewish Congregation of Maui invites the community to celebrate the festival of Purim at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Beit Shalom Synagogue, 634 Alulike St. in Kihei.

To honor the memory of the Persian Jews in strife, Jews around the world refrain from food and drink on the day leading up to the celebration. The day is known as “The Fast of Esther” and this year it occurred Thursday.

During the Purim festivities Saturday, the story of Esther will be read by members of the community. In the spirit of the holiday, people are encouraged to attend in costume and bring mishloach manot, or small portions of food, to give to friends and acquaintances.

At 9:30 a.m. Sunday, there will be Shacharit/morning service followed by a traditional reading of Megillat Esther/The Scroll of Esther. People are again encouraged to come in costume and bring mishloach manot to give to friends and acquaintances.

The Jewish Congregation of Maui is also collecting packaged and canned foods for the Maui Food Bank through April 7 in observance of the directive to help the needy from Purim to Passover. Items may be dropped off at the synagogue. Financial contributions for the food bank are also welcome.

For more information, contact the synagogue office at 874-5397 or jcom@hawaiibiz.rr.com.
