Yom Hashoah observance set
Local Religion/In Brief
The Jewish Congregation of Maui will observe Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Memorial Day, at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Beit Shalom Synagogue, 634 Alulike St. in Kihei.
On Yom Hashoah, Jews remember and recognize the 6 million men, women and children whose lives were tragically stolen by the Nazis in a plan to rid the world of Jews. Participants will light six candles to represent the murdered Jews; recount the tales of victims and survivors; read stories of heroism, hope and miracles; recite poetry written by children in the ghetto; and pray for the elevation of the victims’ souls.
The observation also will include a screening of the movie “Denial,” starring Rachel Weisz and Timothy Spall. It is the true story of the prosecution of a Holocaust denier.
