New minister at Makawao Hongwanji

Kiyohara

The Rev. Kerry Kiyohara is now the resident minister at the Makawao Hongwanji Mission.

Kiyohara began his assignment on June 1. He replaces the Rev. William Masuda, who retired and moved back to California in March. Masuda had been at Makawao for two years.

Kiyohara received tokudo ordination in 2016 and graduated from Chuo Bukkyo Gakuin Seminary and received kyoshi certification in 2018, according to a Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii headquarters update.

Kiyohara was previously a creative copywriter, corporate executive and strategy consultant.

He graduated with Bachelor of Arts and Master of Business Administration degrees from the University of Southern California and worked in Tokyo, Beijing and Shanghai, according to the update.

Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii is the umbrella organization for Jodo Shinshu Buddhism in the islands. The Makawao temple is one of its missions in Hawaii.
