‘Women’s Voices in Buddhism’ lecture

“Women’s Voices in Buddhism” is the title of a lecture that will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 20 and from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 21 at Kahului Hongwanji Mission.

The registration fee is $15 for both days or $5 for Oct. 21 only. The fee includes refreshments and lunch. The deadline to register is Oct. 12.

The Rev. Yuika Hasebe and Rev. Mieko Majima, ordained ministers of Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii, will share their experience, knowledge and insight into Buddhism’s past and present — as well as their understanding of the Shin Buddhist Path — from their perspectives as women.

The program will provide a historical survey of women in Buddhism, focusing on the lives of important women practitioners from the earliest times, through Eshin-ni and Kakushin-ni, up to the modern era including the formation of the Buddhist Women’s Association, and the importance of women as Buddhist role models in the home.

The lecture will emphasize the ways the Pure Land teachings, especially the Shin Buddhist Path taught by Shinran Shonin, helped to overcome and transcend all types of biases, especially those against women.

To register today or for more information, contact Kahului Hongwanji Mission at kahuluihongwanji@hawaii.rr.com or 871-4732.
