Interfaith services at Wailuku church

Iao United Church of Christ in Wailuku is holding a series of Interfaith Candlelight Prayer & Worship (Taize style) services on Thursday evenings through April 11.

The services will start at 7:30 p.m. and take place at the church sanctuary at 2371 W. Vineyard St. Ecumenical leaders will include the Rev. Florentino Cordova from Iao UCC and the Rev. John Tomoso of the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church.

A Taize worship service involves sung and chanted prayers, periods of silent meditation, and liturgical or other readings. Iao UCC’s variation of the service will include a station for the sacrament of communion, prayer offering, and candle lighting.

This meditative service is based on the tradition of an ecumenical community of monks in Taize, France — with a strong devotion to peace and justice as achieved through prayer and meditation. The 100-strong community of monks is drawn from individuals from some 30 countries around the world.
