Bert Martin Luna, 74

Bert Martin Luna was born on July 25, 1938, in Waimea, Kauai, to Martin T. Luna and Mary Yanos Luna, who worked on the sugar plantation there.

“Sonny,” as he was then known, played tennis and basketball and rose from his rural community of Kekaha to be elected Boy Governor of the State of Hawaii.

In 1956, Martin matriculated at Emory University in Georgia, earning a B.A. and M.A. in political science.

He later was honorably discharged from the U.S. Air Force, began law school at Cornell and received his law degree from George Washington University.

Martin married Kay Yoshiko Tateishi of Honolulu, Hawaii, on August 21, 1965.

They made their home first in Kahului and later in Wailuku, Maui, where Martin built his real property law practice at Ueoka and Luna and Carlsmith Ball.

Martin died at dawn on Sunday, January 20, 2013, with his wife, three children and his sister by his bedside.

He is survived by Kay; their three children, Neal (Jennifer), Dane (Michele) and Kari Nunokawa (Craig); six grandchildren, Marisa (11), Hie (8), Jordyn (8), Luke (4), Ethan (2) and Noah (1); and his sister, Lily Hummel.

A celebration of Martin’s life will occur this Saturday, January 26, at the Ala Lani United Methodist Church (50 S. Papa Ave., Kahului, HI 96732). Visitation will begin at 3:30 p.m., followed by a service at 5:30 p.m.
