Michiko Nagata Miller, 76

Michiko Nagata Miller, age 76 of Maui, Hawaii passed away on Monday, March 2, 2015.

Michiko was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Gayle Miller in 2004.

She is survived by her son, the Rev. Donald Yukio Miller, and wife the Rev. Mary C. Peters, Atlanta, GA, sisters Lillian Hanayo Nakao, Carol Sakai (Ken Sakai), brothers Warren Nagata (Marilyn), Gordon Honda, Yuji Nagata (Carol), several cousins and many nieces and nephews in whom she delighted in reuniting.

Mrs. Miller was born July 20, 1938 and raised on Maui, Hawaii and graduated Baldwin High School, 1957.

A significant part of Michiko’s life was her employment as a nanny for the John Marshall family of Rapidan, Virginia, 1957-1966. She accompanied the Marshall family to Germany for four years then came to Virginia until the family’s children were grown.

The next phase of Michiko’s life included the Waynesboro School of Nursing where she met and married Roger Gayle Miller. Upon graduation from nursing school Michiko worked at Waynesboro Community Hospital and Henrico Doctors’ Hospital. She subsequently worked and retired from Augusta Medical Center, Fishersville, VA. After 40 years of life in Virginia she and her husband retired in 2003 to Maui.

Michiko was especially proud of being Hawaii-born Japanese. The passing on her cultural heritage was a significant part of her life. However, her heart was also always with her Virginia family and she returned frequently, always eager to visit and be of assistance.

A Memorial Service will be held at Valley Isle Fellowship, Wailuku, HI on Friday, March 13, 2015. Visitation will begin at 4:00 PM with the Service at 5:00 PM. Pastor Stephen Kaneshiro officiating.
