James W.S. Shipe, 79

James W.S. Shipe, 79, of Lahaina, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2017 under the compassionate care of Hospice Maui and his loving family. Services honoring Mr. Shipe will be held at Nakamura Mortuary on Friday, June 23, 2017. Visitation will begin at 5:00pm, with services beginning at 6:00pm.

Nakamura Mortuary is assisting with arrangements.

James was born on March 4, 1938 to Doc. Homer & Gertrude Shipe in Knoxville, Tenn. After serving the U.S. Navy brought James to Maui, he decided to make a permanent move to the island. He was the superintendent at Ka’anapali Golf Course. Even when he wasn’t working, James couldn’t stay away from the course because he was an avid golfer. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing and doting on his grandchildren.

James was predeceased by his parents, and his son, Michael A. Shipe. He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his beloved wife, June Shipe; daughters, Stephanie Smythe & Tracy (Dylan) Grafmyre; step-daughter, Mokihana (Michael) McGorty; grandchildren, Duke Smythe, Summer (Gilou) Gerling, Jamelynn Smythe & Rose Grafmyre; greatgrandchildren, Teiva & Maiana Gerling, and baby Kalei Aloha Makayla McGorty, his “Pumpkin”; and many loving nieces and nephews from Tennessee.
