Alexander Theodore Kowalski Sr, 90, died on September 13, 2017 at home in Pukalani, Maui.
Alex, Dad, Papa, Grandpa, Tutu Man, “Uncle Ski” is survived by his wife, Violet (Pio) of Pukalani; his sons, Joseph (Vida) of Wailuku, Joshua of Pukalani, his daughters, Lurline of Las Vegas, Renee of Ohio, Marcy (Julio Torres) of Kahului, Stephanie of Missouri, Toni (Michael Dacquel) of Kahului, Anela (Roger Thompson) of Pukalani; 10 Grandchildren; 22 Great Grandchildren, and 1 Great Great Grandchild. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Bernadette Mahealani Kowalski; son, Alexander T Kowalski Jr; grandsons, Heath “Beau” Kowalski, and Francis “Frankie” Eugene Horton III.
Alex was born on July 17, 1927 in Euclid, Ohio to parents, Teddy and Anna (Ivanko). The Navy and WW II brought Alex to Hawaii where he met the love of his life and he settled to raise his family. He considered Hawaii home, as this is where his heart and family were. Alex worked for the University of Hawaii for over 20 years on Haleakala. His love and life were in Radio. Alex worked for many stations, KAOI radio the longest. He helped put it on the air, and still worked there till his retirement on August 1st of 2017 as he said it was time to stop working when he turned 90. Alex is a founder of KPOA radio. The first broadcast was Halloween night, October of 1984 when a dream to start and own his own radio station became a reality.
Visitation will be held on Monday, September 25, 2017 at Ballard Family Mortuary in Kahului from 5pm – 8pm. Visitation will continue on Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at St. Joseph Church in Makawao at 10am. Mass will be celebrated at 11am with burial to follow at the Maui Veteran’s Cemetery in Makawao at 1pm.
