Torio Nishida, 96

Torio Nishida, 96, of Wailuku, passed away peacefully on November 27, 2017 at Hale Makua Kahului, surrounded by his loving children.

Services honoring Mr. Nishida were held privately. Nakamura Mortuary assisted with arrangements.

Torio was born on January 27, 1921 in Omaopio, he was the fourth of nine children. He attended Kula Elementary and then began working on the family farm. The Nishida family cultivated pineapple and “truck crops”. In 1943, he married his love, Yuriko Inazaki and together they raised two children. In 1944, Torio entered the U.S. Army, serving in the 1399th Engineer Construction Battalion during World War II. Upon his return, Torio worked for various agricultural and distribution companies such as Wailuku Sugar Co., Seaview Farms, M & K Distributors and King Theater. He was an incredibly hard worker and provided well for his family.

When he wasn’t working, Torio enjoyed having friends over to talk story and share pupus, working in his yard, and teaching friends to drive.

He will be remembered as a friendly, social, generous and kind-hearted man.

Mr. Nishida was predeceased by his beloved wife, Yuriko “Lillian” Nishida. He leaves behind to cherish his memory, son, Roy (Leila) Nishida; daughter, Eleanor Nishida; grandchildren, Carrie (Peter) Pereira & Lianne (Shaun) Nishida-Costello; 5 great grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; and numerous loving nieces and nephews.
