Clarence Makoto Okamura, 86

Clarence Makoto Okamura, 86, of Kula, passed away peacefully on March 12, 2019, at Maui Memorial Medical Center.

Services honoring Mr. Okamura were held privately at his request.

Nakamura Mortuary assisted with the arrangements.

Clarence was born on April 12, 1932, in Wailuku to Masaru & Hinayo Okamura. He was the eldest of three siblings, followed by sisters Clara and Jane. Clarence attended Lahainaluna High School and graduated in 1950. In 1952, he joined the U.S. Army to fight in the Korean War, working his way up to the rank of staff sergeant. Upon his discharge, Clarence moved to Los Angeles, where he lived and worked until ultimately returning to Maui. Once back, he helped on the family farm and was introduced to Ruth Masuoka, whom he married in 1962. The couple raised two children together while Ruth taught at Kula Elementary School and Clarence delivered mail as a rural route carrier. Some of Clarence’s passions included “talking story”; eating; and growing, roasting, and making his own coffee. He will be remembered as being hard-working, friendly, open, and social; a real “people person.”

Mr. Okamura is survived by his daughter, Lori Okamura, and son, Rod Okamura.
