Shop locally, help a friend

For the last couple of years, we’ve been urging residents to take “staycations” and avoid the temptation of shopping online.

Even though our resorts, restaurants and activity operators are seeing a strong rebound from the recession, it is worthwhile to note that we do have the finest vacation facilities on the planet right here on Maui. And virtually all of them have kamaaina discounts.

So . . . when the best buy and the best vacation are right here, why would you want to go anywhere else? Check the deals here at home first.

The same goes for shopping. As we’ve discussed before, a dollar spent online is not going to walk back into the door of your business. But, if you spend it locally there’s a good chance that the business you work for – or even own – will see that dollar march right back in the door.

Frankly, shopping locally is the best way to ensure that friends, neighbors and even ourselves stay employed.

The next holiday coming up is Valentine’s Day. There are lots of flower shops, jewelry stores, greeting-card vendors, department stores and candy sellers right here on Maui. Don’t order your sweetheart’s gift from a computerized warehouse somewhere around the world.

Order it from a neighbor.

As we’ve said many times here before: Shopping locally is just good business.
