St. Anthony’s does us proud
What a thrilling time to be a young musician at St. Anthony Junior Senior High School.
The 44 members of the symphonic band will perform in the 2013 Manhattan Concert Production National Band and Orchestra Festival at Carnegie Hall on April 1.
The musicians also will perform on the USS Intrepid and under the Statue of Liberty.
Yesterday’s Maui News gave the details of the New York trip beginning with band teacher Everett Lee Yamashita submitting a secret tape of the band to festival officials more than two years ago.
The festival deemed St. Anthony’s good enough to appear and will be one of five high school bands in the country to appear at the concert. Yamashita asked for the two-year delay so the school could raise the funds for the trip.
And raise them they did. Since December 2011, some $114,000 has been raised through benefit concerts, carnivals, business solicitations, sales of candy and from proud alumni.
In addition to the torrent of fundraising activities, the story reported that for the past month the band has been practicing before, during and after school.
We would like to congratulate these fine musicians – and Mr. Yamashita – for all of their hard work. Everyone on Maui will take pride in your Carnegie Hall appearance.
