First Light begins on Wednesday

There are many wonderful things about living on Maui and one of them is that we get many of the amenities of an urban area while enjoying the ambience of small-town life.

Twice a year Barry and Stella Rivers provide some of those big-city amenities through their work on the Maui Film Festival. While the Maui Film Festival Wailea takes place in June, their FirstLight slate of films that runs every holiday season gives Maui a chance to see a variety of great films – some of which will undoubtedly be garnering Academy Awards in a couple of months’ time.

FirstLight 2013-2014 opens Wednesday at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s Castle Theater. Over 12 days, 36 films, including 25 premieres, will be shown. Subjects of the movies will range from Nelson Mandela to Walt Disney, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band to Doc Pomus.

If you are into stars, the FirstLight will have films with Julia Roberts, Tom Hanks Emma Thompson, Matthew McConaughey, Meryl Streep, Leonardo DiCaprio, Judi Dench, Robert Redford, Scarlett Johansson, James Gandolfini and Kate Winslet, among dozens of others.

A brochure with the complete list of FirstLight films is included in today’s Maui News, or you can see the schedule and view trailers at MauiFilmFestival.com.

Tickets and ticket packages are also available at that site.

Viewing a movie or two at FirstLight in the comfort of the Castle Theater is a great family gift for the holidays. It will give you a jump on the Oscars too.

See you at FirstLight.
