Friday’s press breakdown
Friday morning’s paper was delayed for hours when a gearbox that controls the speed of the press went bad.
Some papers were not delivered until Saturday morning because carriers have other jobs and were not available for their routes when the paper was finally ready.
While this is the first time in the 8 1/2 years we have had this press such a serious situation has arisen, we’d like to let readers know how we handled Friday and will do so if a breakdown happens in the future.
We immediately made access to our whole website available for free. Our replica edition (an exact copy of that day’s print edition) requires a user name and a password. We set up a universal user name and password (email@example.com, password – free) to give everyone the ability to see that day’s paper. That user name expired at midnight Friday, but will be activated again if there is ever another breakdown.
We’d like to thank our readers for their patience and for all the phone calls we received Friday asking where the paper was. We apologize for the breakdown.
In the future, if the paper is late and you are having trouble getting through to a customer service representative, please check our website, mauinews.com. We will try to keep you updated on the situation and will make sure that everyone has access to that day’s news and newspaper through our website.
Again, thank you for your patience and your patronage.
