Have a safe Super Sunday

Well, it’s Super Sunday.

Later today, most of us (and the rest of the United States) will watch the Super Bowl to see who prevails — the Atlanta Falcons or the always-ferocious New England Patriots.

It is the 51st edition of the greatest spectacle in sports.

There will be betting on everything from the point spread to over/under to whether the next commercial will be for a beer, chips or electronics device.

Oh, and yeah, there will be Super Bowl parties. In our judgment, there are more Super Bowl parties now than New Year’s soirees. And they have the potential to be a lot more dangerous.

Drinking will begin early in the afternoon at many of these super celebrations. Because of all the hoopla leading up to kickoff, the long halftime show and the presentation of the Lombardi Trophy to the winners, the game will be the longest of the season by far.

It is, therefore, very important to have a designated driver — whether it is a friend or family member who foregoes alcohol today or your favorite taxi service.

The police will be out in force to arrest impaired drivers, but the more important reason for a sober driver is the safety of our friends and neighbors on Maui.

Have a great time watching the Super Bowl today. But make sure it is not only a good time, but a safe one, too.
