The time for giving

As we start the holiday period, it’s nice to remember the cardinal rule of the season — ’tis better to give than receive.

We were recently reminded that some people in our community give 52 weeks a year — like the folks at Feed My Sheep.

Feed My Sheep is the brainchild of Joyce Kawakami, whom we refer to as an angel here a couple of times per year. The goal of the nonprofit is to eliminate poverty here on Maui. The first step in that admittedly lofty goal is to eliminate hunger.

Joyce and her crew take a little different approach to the hunger issue. Instead of individual meals, Feed My Sheep gives people a whole week’s worth of food. Feed My Sheep can purchase, warehouse, package and deliver a whole week’s worth of food for an individual for about $10.

Every week Feed My Sheep distributes food in Lahaina, Kahana, Kahului and Kihei. Once a month there is a food distribution in Hana. Each month Feed My Sheep gives out 69,000 half-pound meals.

Your donations can make a difference in eliminating hunger. An ongoing donation — even a small one — will put food on the table of hungry children and adults on Maui.

The organization’s website is You can make a donation online (see the Donate button at the bottom of the home page), find out more about the nonprofit or become one of Joyce’s hundreds of volunteers.

If you prefer to donate by check, send it to:

It is important to note that Feed My Sheep welcomes gifts of food and other household items.

The holidays are more joyous when we remember to help others. A gift to Feed My Sheep will help an awful lot of other people enjoy the season.
