Counting blessings

“When I’m worried and I can’t sleep

I count my blessings instead of sheep

And I fall asleep counting my blessings”

— From the 1954 movie “White Christmas”

People who are lucky enough to live on Maui have many things to be thankful for this holiday season.

We live in a free country; our little island is truly a paradise, blessed with what meteorologist Guy Hagi reminds us constantly is “the best weather on the planet”; and our state is ruled by the spirit of aloha.

All in all, we seem to have a lot more blessings than Bing Crosby had when he sang “Counting My Blessings” in “White Christmas.” It’s for that very reason that we are once again reminding our readers to share with the less fortunate during the holidays.

One of the great offshoots of the aloha spirit is our network of nonprofits that help our fellow citizens 24 hours per day, 365 days a year. As we’ve mentioned previously, if you want to see your dollars spread among some great agencies, be sure you donate to the Maui United Way.

The Salvation Army also reaches out to virtually all elements of our society — children, the poor, the elderly and the hungry to name a few.

If you want to help specific elements of society, here are a couple of suggestions:

* To reach out to children, donate to the Friends of the Children’s Justice Center or Big Brothers Big Sisters.

* To help feed the hungry, there are Maui Food Bank, Feed My Sheep and Hale Kau Kau at Saint Theresa Church in Kihei.

* To keep our island, nation and state in a condition of readiness to respond to disasters, donate to the Red Cross.

There are many ways to help. The important thing is to do so this holiday season.

Count your blessings and help your friends and neighbors find some of their own with a donation to our nonprofits.

* Editorials reflect the opinion of the publisher.
