Rep. Ing’s efforts on smoking bans appreciated
I would like to applaud state Rep. Kaniela Ing for bringing forth a bill to ban smoking at Hawaii beaches and parks (The Maui News, Jan. 31).
His championing this cause does not mean that he is overlooking other important issues. It is just an obvious need that he is addressing quickly. Many, many beach communities where land, sea creatures and humans stand in harm’s way have already banned smoking. Hawaii is just behind schedule.
Smoking on and near our beaches and picnic areas has become a huge pollutant to our environment and to the health of our citizens. Smoking and its effects have become a drain on our medical care system.
I would like to enjoy a sunrise, a nice lunch, a walk to the restroom and a sunset without smoke drifting my way.
