Viewpoint: Group’s goal is no more homeless pets
In celebration of World Spay Day on Tuesday, I would like to say that every day is Spay Day at SPCA Maui.
Founded in 2009 by a small group of experienced animal welfare advocates, SPCA Maui’s mission is to create a “no more homeless pets Maui” and to stop the killing of companion animals as a means of population control.
Many people are unaware that approximately 10,000 animals enter our local shelter each year and the majority of those animals are euthanized.
SPCA Maui realizes that the only way to end this senseless crisis is through aggressive spay/neuter efforts. In April 2011, SPCA Maui launched its Spay Neuter Assistance Program to assist the residents of Maui County. Since that time, SPCA has provided spay/neuter services to more than 1,300 dogs and cats.
The program is simple and truly affordable. SNAP clients are placed with participating veterinarians and pay only what they can afford. In other words, the client sets the fee and SPCA picks up the rest.
Donation-based cat sterilization clinics which can accommodate up to 200 cats per clinic are held regularly. The most recent SPCA Maui cat clinic saw the sterilization of 170 cats in one day. The next cat clinic will be held March 3. Space can be reserved by calling 280-0738.
SPCA Maui also provides pet food for needy families, averaging more than 100 pounds of pet food distributed each month.
SPCA Maui is an all-volunteer nonprofit organization made up of a dedicated board and talented, devoted volunteers. We receive no government funding but rely solely on donations and grants. In forwarding our mission, SPCA Maui’s future goals include procuring a mobile spay/neuter vehicle to access rural areas on Maui, a pet foster care program, an enclosed feral cat sanctuary and, ultimately, a no-kill animal sanctuary.
