DOE officials guilty as well of bullying student

I was extremely disturbed by the experiences of Eileen Parkman (The Maui News, March 10), the exceptional 9-year-old student who came to the defense of fellow student Jimmy Mandeville only to end up being a multiple-bullied victim herself.

She was bullied not only by the bullies of Jimmy Mandeville but also by the officials of the Department of Education who processed the case. The DOE rationale given to support DOE handling of the case is fundamentally dismissive in character and lacks the sensitivity required by DOE officials to change within and and bring about needed changes.

Sadly, the real outcome is that the family had to remove their daughter from school for her own safety but, in the long view, perhaps not for her total well-being.
