Children deserve more protection from predators

A March 22 letter slamed state Sen. Sam Slom for stating some cultures do not find adults having sexual relations with children a crime. He stated this when trying to explain to Bill O’Reilly why Hawaii is so lienent on child predators. It appears that the judicial branch is part of this culture.

Second Circuit Judge Richard Bissen sentenced a man to just 18 months in jail for repeated sexual assault of a child for five years starting at age 4 (The Maui News, April 17). In states with Jessica’s Law, this would have resulted in a 25-year minimum for each assault.

It is too bad that the Hawaii Legislature and judicial branch do so little to protect our children from sexual predators.
