Protecting marine life must be political priority

Although I admire and appreciate people who hold political office, there are times when some of them have to be removed from office. Unfortunately, we are faced with that situation now.

There are a number of present officeholders who have voted repeatedly for developments that have killed off reefs and decimated our coastal marine life. They give every indication that, if they are left in office, they will continue to vote for developments that do ecological harm.

Hawaiians controlled these islands for 2,000 years. When they lost control the oceans contained abundant marine life. Hawaiians believe that man should live in harmony with nature.

Too many of our present officeholders believe that nature should be exploited, exploited to the point of extinction. We must put people into office who understand the importance of maintaining a healthy ecosystem.
