Politics should be kept out of budget process

On the front pages of The Maui News on April 30 and May 1, comments such as “mind-boggling” and “too Draconian” from the Maui County Council chairwoman on the conservative approach to the budget by Budget and Finance Chairman Mike White do not advance the collaborative spirit of the process.

If these kinds of statements are out of order during the deliberating stage, they should not be used in the public forum to advance one’s position.

Trying to get a consensus in the committee on the budget is hard enough without being second-guessed outside of the committee. I see politics showing its ugly head and it needs to be laid to rest until the election season.

Please keep from alienating anyone and stay with the process.
