New South Kihei Road sidewalk is appreciated
Mahalo to South Maui Council Member Don Couch and the Arakawa administration for the completion of a new sidewalk on South Kihei Road. The new addition runs from the existing sidewalk at the south end of Maui Kamaole condos, passes by the Maui Hill condos and ends at Ala Koa Street.
This little pedestrian bottleneck, across from the Kihei Boat Ramp, has been a dangerous challenge for walkers and joggers for many years. The existing sidewalk abruptly ended after Maui Kamaole and there was no place to go but onto the street, which narrowed at a crumbling natural rock wall.
The construction job was made much more difficult due to this 12- to 15-foot rock face abutting the roadway. After cutting into the rock wall to allow for the wide new sidewalk, the Public Works Department or the contractor came up with a unique and what seems to be a very effective way to finish off the rock wall face to discourage future rockslides.
Job well done.
Thank you, Don, Mayor Alan Arakawa and other council members, for funding this important project.
