No-kill philosophy has proved to be sensible

Regarding a June 15 letter that disregarded the facts of no kill: If you actually look at the facts, no kill is extremely successful and actually can cost the local shelters less money by saving these animals, than by killing them.

Look at shelters that are no kill. They will be the first to tell you how sensible the no-kill philosophy is and works, and even makes them money – San Francisco; Reno, Nev.; Houston and Austin, Texas.

It isn’t about just not killing any healthy animal that is brought in and piling them up in the back cages. It’s about education, rehabilitation, prevention. It’s about opening your eyes to what is going on around you, not just ignoring the facts that thousands upon thousands of healthy animals are killed year after year with nothing being done about it. It’s taking a stand for what is right and ethical in this community and saying this must be changed. And finding ways to change. It’s about community involvement.

Companion animals are a big part of most families. Every person who has ever had a dog or cat should care and want to become more involved. Go to and you will see many ways to help more animals. We all need to stop ignoring reality by getting rid of anything we don’t want to deal with. And start focusing on becoming a truly humane society.
