Highway lane closure goes beyond announced time

Does the Goodfellow Bros. crew assigned to the force main project in the northbound lanes of Honoapiilani Highway between Kaanapali Parkway and the Fairway Shops need to take a class in day planning?

Public information says workers are supposed to have both lanes open by 3:30 p.m. I plan my weekday trips from Kahana into Lahaina and back late in the day trying to avoid the backup, and I have yet to see both lanes open by 3:30 on any workday since they started the project. On a recent day, at 4:30 p.m., one lane was still closed and traffic was backed up all the way into Lahaina town.

Not only is it a major disruption for the workforce who are employed north of the project trying to make it to evening shifts on time, it’s a major black eye for Maui to the visitors who keep getting caught in it.

There is no way to bypass the area and since there is another night project going on leading up to the force main work area, wouldn’t it make more sense to also do this job between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.?

Goodfellow Bros. enjoys an excellent reputation on Maui and needs to ensure that the cleanup required is done in time to get both lanes open by 3:30 p.m. if it wants that reputation to remain intact.
