News gathering is costly, needs to be paid for

Much to its credit, The Maui News has printed a number of letters criticizing the paper for now charging for online access.

Print media is in big trouble, as evidenced by the recent sale of The Washington Post by the Graham family, stewards of that great paper for 80 years. The same for The Boston Globe. Both sold for pennies on the dollar. There have been others and there will be more.

News gathering is a costly process and we should expect to pay for it. Some suggest there may be no newspapers left by 2025. Let’s hope The Maui News is not among these.
